Years ago when I was disassembling and reassembling my Vespa, I think I used Permatex gasket compound, squirted from a tube. Can't remember whether this was with the old gaskets, or with new gaskets, or instead of gaskets.
Is today's best practice new gasket plus sealer?

Generally speaking if you are using instant (silicone) gasket you don't use a gasket. If you use a gasket then a sealing compound such as hylomar or hermitite is used if needed.
