Standard regulator on a Varitronic or not?

My regulator is knackered on my scooter, can i test out my wiring using a standard regulator or does it have to be an identical Varitronic one? The reason I ask is that a mate can pop one over for me tonight so I can see if I have wired up my scooter lights correctly.

A standard reg will be fine.

Mate has just been with a working regulator and tried it on mine - happy days, works a treat - no more blown bulbs!!!
