Just bought this via mail order. My obvious concern is the holes in the casting on (or to the side) of the gasket face. Is there enough gasket face to seal on?

Yes it has been reworked as you suggest which I'm not entirely happy about. Rebuild/machining and appears fine even though it looks shite.
