There is also a non electrical process called Alodining.

"Alodining is the chemical application of a protective chromate conversion coating on aluminum. The term Alodining has become a generic term for passivation conversion coating on aluminum materials, though in the strictest sense the term only refers to use of the specific Alodine product."

If you can still get the chemicals in reasonable quantities.
Easy to do at home, when ever you have the need. Couple of containers for your bits to fit in. Pair of rubber gloves and goggles. Clock. Jug for mix n'measure.

I use alodine all the time, it's available in clear or straw yellow. It isn't very durable, and is meant as a coating before primer.

The raw chemicals are quite volatile and can combust. You can get pre mix application pens.

Depends what you want to treat.

DO NOT try to anodise a standard cylinder head, it reacts badly with the acid.
