On removing flywheel i found what appears to be engine oil leaking from behind stator plate and collecting at the bottom of mag housing ! So removed stator and mag housing only to find more oil on the back and sides of the mag housing and on the gasket (must be a leak). Could oil make its way past the drive side seal and past the mag housing seal to the flywheel side ?

are you sure its engine oil? Generally engine oil is burnt when a drive side seal has blown and is very noticeable by the white smoke and smell.

It COULD be that just the Mag side seal has gone, allowing petroil through and showing where you describe- the petrol element of the mixture could evaporate just leaving 2T oil.

Might be worth changing the Mag side seal first to see if that stops it.
