Probably a daft question from a newbie, but which way round should a throttle cable be fitted - with the fixed nipple at the headset end or the carb end??
A standard throttle cable has a nipple at each end. The smaller one for the carb, when using Dellorto 18/20mm or Jetex.
Non-standard (usually referred to as extra long) I fit the fixed nipple into the headset and loose at the carb. But I think it can be done the other way round if you choose.
If using a non-standard carb. I seem to remember the loose nipple must go into the headset.

depends how big your nipples are......
Personally I would use the large fixed nipple at the headset end, and a detachable nipple at the carb end purely to facilitate carb removal/ replacement when using a "standard" carb.
The best option are the cables which come with a large fixed nipple on the headset end and a soldered small nipple on the carb end- with those you simply unhook the small nipple from the carb and you can remove carb as the small nipple will pass through the carb rocker.

Thanks for the advice guys - my carb is a standard Dellorto, and the cable has a fixed circular nipple which is currently at the headset end (I assume this is the soldered nipple?). At the carb end the cable passes through a fork behind the carb and then a brass fitment with a threaded nut that can be tigthened up to clamp the cable. Sorry for the layman's description but is this the detachable nipple? This is proving a bugger to tighten due to its position behind the carb and because it's not attached to anything else any attempt to tighten the nut just twists the thing so that when I pull on the throttle the cable is slipping through, creating too much slack and causing the nipple at the headset end to spring out of the recess in the brass wheel.
