Need a bit of help please , im trying to fit the inner part of the bearing to my gt crank , doing it the way i always do , ie crank in the freezer
and the inner race in boiling water , and it just keeps getting stuck after the taper , is there a special bearing for this crankor am i doing something wrong ,
ive also tryed to use a piece of tube and gently knocking it on ,
any ideas ? Steve

I found it a tight fit and had to give it much more welly than expected but it does go on. Maybe you just need to get a bit nastier with it!

i just heat the bearing inner track on a hot radiator for 10 mins ,dont cool the other half as that will super cool the the bearing inner track as you attemp to slide it on then grab before its fully home ,,as you are finding

Once you hammer that race home you will want to have the crank checked for true. Since you don't have the tool to install the race I'm thinking you don't have the one to hold the crank.
Even a couple thousandths (.002" inch) out of true can prematurely wear out the seals and bearings. You would be surprised at how little it takes to change the alignment of a crank.

When I'm fitting the mag race to the crank I use a piece of strong flat metal that slides in between the webs of the crank,I then support the peice of metal so that it holds the centre of the web that I'm working on,that way you can hit the drift and knock the race on with a lot more force.

I heat up the race on top of a aluminium plate which I heat with a good heat gun, the GT crank does have a sharp transition from taper to the part under the taper and if the race falls on slightly at an angle it does get stuck there more so than a standard type crank, if the race is heated enough and dropped on flat it falls on no problem

Just don't apply direct heat from a flame to the race as it will blue!
