I'm having trouble getting the above to seal on a 225 avanti.

I've used 2 different bearings both with the extra seal in, but still burning oil. I've never had this much trouble with the bearings with no seal in - are these just a fad or do I just revert to the bearing with no seal in?
I've also tried MB viton and Rolf seal - still burning gearbox oil.

Using an innocenti seal plate, flat and perfectly round

If you are using one of the thick green drive side gaskets that are supplied in many modern gasket sets then this can cause all sorts of issues this plates not sealing correctly or cranks locking up, which is only cured by fitting a correct thickness gasket. Also, some rebuild kits supply countersunk screws that bottom out before seating correctly, which can be resolved by tapping to full depth or by fitting shorter screws.

Has your crank got a reasonable lead / chamfer on the seal seat edge?

My viton seal had the spring fail and whilst it didn't show any signs of leaking, I did pick up on this when stripping the motor for a different reason.
