Stepped Stud - Stator Bolts?

Hi All,
I've had a few issues recently with bolts coming loose on the stator plate, and stripping the threads in the casing.
I'm thinking a stepped stud would be a good repair, as there would be less screwing in/out of aluminium.
Can I use a M8 to M6 stud? I can get these made at work and have the taps to do the job.

That's what I'm thinking. You can buy M7/M6 ones easy enough but I don't have the taps.

If memory is correct you don`t need to tap the old stripped thread you just screw in the next over size stud in like a self tapper as the ali is softer.
Well thats what i`ve done in the past.
I think thats correct!

i wouldnt recomend just winding in a bigger stud, it will probably crack the case, a stepped stud should do the job as long as there is enough metal, make sure you use a plug tap to finish the threads right down so there are plenty of threads holding the stud, and dont force the tap too far in it might break out of the back, 7mm to 6 mm would be your best bet. try the stud in the hole and trim it so the step is level with the face when tightened up, this is an important area to seal when building your engine, air leaks here are common and cause engine failures.

Time certs are a bit pricey, but on the other hand if you own a scooter a set could be very handy to have.
