Hope this helps people in the same position as I was in, working on an imported silver special the inside of the tank was a horrible rusty mess, trolling the internet and found this solution from America. Fill the tank with white wine vinegar to the brim, fit the cap and leave for 24 hours, empty the tank into a bucket you will be amazed at the amount of rust and s**t that comes out, save the vinegar just in case you have to repeat, on my tank it was as clean as when it was new (IMPORTANT) you need to neutralise the acid that is left in the tank with a strong solution of Bicarbonate of soda and water, empty out and put a few litres of Diesel in the tank swill round and leave till you are ready to fill with Petrol & two stroke.

When you said to save the vinegar I thought you were going to suggest putting it on your salad

I used brick acid from b and q.
i also did lots of other metal bits as well.
only problem is if you leave it too long it will melt bits.
Melted the fuel tap. Not a worry as i am fitting a fast flow tap.
needs to be neutralised afterwards. Never thought of using diesel. I sprayed inside with oil and wd 40.
Cleans metal brilliantly.

Get a POR15 kit from Frosts, if the rusting is heavy put some nuts, bolts and diesel and shake vigorously for a long time before you use the kit.
