After seizing this up, possibly due to due to bad fuel as it was the second one to go after a fill up, I certainly need a new piston. There some scores below the exhaust port and quite a bit of piston on the barrel. Anyone successfully cleaned up one of these barrels or is a replate the best option?
If I have to get it replated how do I know what grade piston to buy? I'd expected a mark somewhere on the barrel to indicate?

always worth a good clean up to assess the damage ,they often look worse than they are ...use wet n dry .

It's not worth replating. I've just had a quote for mine. £135 plus vat plus postage both ways. New piston £80. Brand new kit from Beedspeed £250.

I cleaned one up after a fuel related seize. It is surprising what you can still run and after a good clean as said things look different after a clean. I wet and dry the high spots with wd40 then run a 3 legged glaze buster with with fine stone and again some wd40.
(done the same a TS1 and it's done loads miles since)
Consider a liner if it goosed and a suzuki TS185 piston - I've do the suzuki conversion on a malossi 172 and a polini 152 bored out. The pistons are a great value alterative but you need to shorten the skirt, cut windows and modify head to suzuki profile. Great if you fancy a bit of tinkering.

Will give it a clean up,and see what it looks like - should there be a mark to indicate the piston grade somewhere?

On malossi kits there should be a mark/number on the underside of the cylinder to indicate relative piston grade...

I think muriatic acid might be the answer. I remember reading about people using it on snowmobile motors to dissolve any aluminium smeared on the nicosil plating. Also a bucket of water nearby and an outdoors environment are important too due to very toxic fumes produced. You'd need to be very careful with the stuff.

muriatic acid is hydrochloric acid and the easiest available form is in brick/patio cleaner.
I`ve heard of this been used to "melt" away the ali deposits of the piston without affecting the nicosil or iron of the cylinder but what happens if the acid gets to the ali barrel through say a small break in the nicosil that might not affect the running, in some cases a loss of nicosil coating will not affect the barrel and a new piston in use depending on the location and extent.
The acid could make the situation worse.
I`d be less concerned if I was just trying to get ali of iron.
I would proceed with extreme caution if using acid, and not just in the case the health and safety issues.
