Gearbox 'tapping sound' in neutral

SIL 200 engine, when pushing the scooter along while in neutral there'sa 'tapping' sound like the gear selector is touching the side of a gear.
When running he sound isn't there and will run in neutral on the stand or idling at the lights with no issues what so ever.
I've noticed this noise on several different SIL engines but never on my Serveta or Innocenti engines.
Is this merely a gearbox shimming issue? and would this account for the scooter jumping out of 4th gear under load?

could the sound be the balls in the rear hub bearing all dropping down to the bottom as your pushing it along ?

i think you could be right about the selector catching the gears. Rimini have brought out a new layshaft that is supposed to cure this problem. something to do with the spring/ ball drilling i think.

I had a similar noise from mine and turned out the rim was cracked. Only found it 'cos I had a flat.
