Hi all, would a badly made / fitting halite washer cause an air leak crank side? The reason I ask is during a leak down test there was a leak at the crank into the side casing. I obviously assumed the oil seal was at fault. Anyway after a strip down the oil seal isn't damaged. I did notice the halite washer to be a poor fit and seemed a bit big. Could this be the cause rather than the seal? Thanks in advance Pete.

I dont know if they would cause an air leak, but I do know that they have different thicknesses,in fact I,ve just changed one today because it was to thick and it caused the crank to rub on the oil seal plate.

I had a leaking seal on my current build even though everything looked OK.

I smeared a wee bit of threebond 1215 on the outer face of the seal before reassembly and that cured it.

I've also had problems with too thick halite washers catching the crank web but I can't see how that would cause a leak.

Cheers for that. I'm going to change the seal as a matter of course. I've ordered some new washers too. I thought as I fitted it that it was badly made.

I have found that the ones that are slightly to big on the outer dia can cause an air leak as it can cause the plate not to be fully seated correctly when bolted down, you will also find there is a variety of thicknesses from 0.5 to 1mm , ideally you want 0.5mm thick and one that is not a tight fit , any that are thicker than 0.5mm can cause the plate not to sit fully down and reduce the clearance between the plate and crank ( 0.5mm ) min clearance, if to tight you should remove the crank and fit a shim that spacers the crank off the drive bearing inner , some of the hallite gasket in indian gasket sets are to big but some i have found to be ok and are around 0.75mm thick and sometimes get away without a crank shim, i now buy drive hallites from people like chiggy at lambretta upgrades whos are 0.5mm and a good fit or scootopia gaskets sets them and skf explorer RS1 Italian made drive bearing with the extra seal works really well. ive never tried adding some yamabond on the gasket but it may be a good idea.

Cheers for that. I actually got the washer from Chiggy. I'm going to check the countersunk screws are pulling the plate fully home. It's a new Indian casing and perhaps the holes haven't been drilled deep enough? The washer wasn't crushed into the bearing like I expected it to be. I've ordered a new washer and will fit it with yamabond.

yes tap out the bolt holes , check the depth then make sure your bolts are not to long , lay the plate into the recess and check its sitting in correctly.

It's turns out the screws weren't pulling the plate fully home. I've changed them for shorter ones and all is well. Thanks for your help fellas.
