Engine number.

Hi all, for my new project I've used a new unstamped SIL casing. Now I'm sure by law you do not need an engine number? Anyway I'd like to have one on it but I've painted the casing now and stamping it would not doubt damage the paint. Could I perhaps get a small piece of ally plate the same size as the engine number area engraved with a number of my choosing and screw it over it? Would this be legal / illegal? Or should I just leave as is? I don't want any complications when I go to register it. Thanks in advance Pete.

yes you don't need a number.

Personally I would remove the paint along the flat area where the number should be, and stamp it in- would look much better than an alloy plate IMO.

These days I can't see it being any less complicated with no engine number.

I put mine in a late Serveta LIS so I stamped the frame number on it. ;)

I spoke to DVLA about this and they say they don't have a data base for engine numbers.......so no numbers required.

I toyed with the idea of stamping something obscene on my engine case just for the childish pleasure of seeing a rude word on the logbook. In the end I bottled out. The registration process can be tricky enough without annoying them.

Probably a good decision with hindsight :D
