My exhaust is a right old tatty mess. It's lost a lot of its paint, is rusty in places and pretty oilily too. What cab I do to improve its appearance?

Af Small Bore, as for value who knows, not much probably, but if you are hinting at the fact that I could replace it, maybe the better question would be 'what's your budget?' to which I would reply, 'f all!'

I have some heat resistant exhaust paint, which I actually bought for the pipe I had before this (the one that was fitted when it came over from India) and never used, but part of me feels that with so little prep its just going to come back off again and make it even worse. Is there a good way of degreasing the thing first? Would some sort of primer help?

To justify the work involved i'd give it a de-coke as well. Caustic soda works well, but watch the fumes and it can burn, so wear gloves.

B & Q barbecue paint is pretty good. The paint needs curing for an hour or so, otherwise it comes off really easily. I've cured small bits in an oven, but I guess a good long run will work for an exhaust.

There's a good pad thing that removes rust without taking off the steel, that works pretty well, but it's £7. You can get one type that fits in a drill or one that fits in an angle grinder.

Do you think that BBQ paint and exhaust paint are that much different?
I will see if the pipe will fit in the oven. The downpipe at least will. Otherwise I can leave the job until when my engine is ready to go back in.
