Wandering Timing

I fitted a new BGM pick up to a stator but couldn't get a spark so fitted a used Indian one and the scoot started and revs fine but when I come to strobe it the timing flickers between the timing marks. It has the slight advance when held a 2k but then jumps about at higher revs. Alignment between the pick up and Ducati flywheel is fine so would a Vespa pick up help?
