i'm fitting a fuel tank sender and guage that needs a 12v battery supply so have bought one of the tiny trailtech batteries from mrb but wondered how easy it was to fit a charging system to my non battery lambretta .. is it just a case of getting a dc regulator or do i need to do more than that??

the podtronics type solution is a good way to go.
see
this thread.
I'm running a 12v DC tacho using an additional rectifier plugged in, along with some zenor diodes to stabilise the power.

but if i was starting from scratch i'd take advantage of soulsurfer's R&D.

The simplest way to charge a small battery would be to fit a regulator with a DC output or, even cheaper, a scootrs type rectifier.

good info is going with whatever firekdp suggests.
I was trying to avoid fitting a battery, but still might when I next think about rewiring. where are you going to fit yours ?
