Newfren brake shoes

restoring my GP at the moment, just fit front and rear brakes with new hubs (sil front and scootopia rear) and I have little/no travel on the brake arms
i'm thinking of filing the shoes where the cam goes on them or spend hours trying to sand the shoes down a bit.
or should I just bin em and try something else ?
I know a few people have had trouble with newfren shoes and just wondered how people got round this issue
