I recently acquired a 1980 Vespa P200e with about 21000 miles - most of those from prior owner(s). Prior to this scoot, I last rode a Vespa 50 years ago. So I've been refamiliarizing myself with them.

The machine will currently top out at about 50 mph. It has a wind/bug screen which reaches about chin height.

It seems unusually influenced by wind, even if there seem to be few or no external signs such as trees blowing.

Now I'm wondering if there are mechanical issues I should consider. I've noticed that the rear wheel is not vertical when the scoot is on level ground. Looking at it from the rear, the wheel slopes at a slight angle toward the right. If this could be a problem, what is the most probable cause?

With your observation re back wheel position, it is probably the engine mounts are knackered. Worth checking it hasn't been run around with the main pivot bolt loose. Loosen nut and partially slide bolt out (which in itself might be a struggle re age) and see if hole has elongated (worn). With that age, and no true indication of mileage (speedo cable breakage/ replacement at sometime), with front wheel raised while on stand, check steering bearings are not seized, brinelled (due to long term storage temperature fluctuations), or over-tightened. Whilst you're at it, just check the front wheel spindle bearings. At a guess, you'll have issues with one of them as well as the engine mount. All are easily repaired/ replaced. If you suspect the screen, which I doubt because of you saying it feel likes it without wind, just whip it off for a day and try it. Take photo before / after removal, and you can decide yourself which look/ practicality it can really offer. Oh, and definitely check your tyre pressures/ wear/ profile of tyre. Simon.

Check rear shock absorber, if the spring is knackered this will add to the wheel engine sitting lobsided...............

If you do the main engine mounts don't forget to do the rear shocker one aswell
