Whats the best place to position the gear selector arm on top of the chaincase for a five speed when setting up and which gear should be selected.

I always set them up starting in 5th (or 4th depending on the gearbox). This way you know the shift arm won't hit the shock mount. Just get it as close as you can without touching the mount and it will be fine.
i agree with Grumpy about "top" gear as i had a lot of trouble with false neutrals in the past,( not on a five speed). you can also hear a distinctive clunk in top so you know you are there. i say top gear, as there should be no difference with 4 or 5 gears as there is the same range of movement for both and you will know the lever clears the casing. i ride with a cyclone that i fitted a couple of years ago.
