Hi all, since getting back into Lambrettas a few years back I've gone for high revving tuned motors. I've had an Imola, RB200 and RB250. All were set up as screamers. Lots of fun if kept on the power but not ideal for long distances. I'm thinking of maybe going for something a bit more suited for cruising speeds. Ideally something that will sit between 65-70mph without revving the nuts out of it. I have a spare 200 case knocking about plus plenty of chain / sprocket combos I can experiment with. What kits are out there that would fit the bill? I'm not minted but have reasonable "disposable income" so money no real issue. Any advice or pointers very welcome. Thanks in advance Pete.

Avanti would be on the list for a tourer.

Avantis are surprisingly good in a range of configurations, which I think are down to the 'port time area' of the exhaust port, rather than simply exhaust duration. Set up with a torque'y pipe, suitable carb size and long gearing they make for an excellent high speed tourer. However, set an Avanti up with a revvy pipe and shorter gearing and they rev way beyond what you expect from the exhaust duration.

The Avanti really is a very versatile kit.

For your requirement, I would also think about something very simple, faster than most expect, extremely reliable and a fantastic ride..... an iron 225 with very limited porting, 60mm stroke and one of the better clubman pipes around. More and more of my mates are taking off over-tuned kits and returning to lower revving set-ups.

Edit: One thing that I'd say to watch out for is that some of the non-reed kits fall between the advantages of a lesser ported piston port kit and the benefits of reed valve kits, simply being revvy piston port kits that have not got the benefits of the grunt provided by either a conservatively ported piston port or reed kit. You quite commonly find that the piston port kits available still want to run at the RPM range that requires an expansion, when fitting a clubman doesn't allow it to function correctly for the barrel's porting spec'.

NB: Even the Avanti kit is of the state of tune that you would require a revvier clubman for it to work correctly, with Ron Moss commonly setting them up with expansions to get the best out of the kit for fast touring use.

try a Harry Barlow of pro porting kit he does upto a 280cc + kit low revving and go on for ever :D

I've tried a few kits in my time and tuned motors 30 hp + , last year i brought gp 200 back to life with a GT 200 kit, 60 x 110 crank and modified TT evo pipe 30 mm carb
After a seasons use id say that is ideal tourer set up, pulls to 70 mph no probs loaded up or not, dump clutch and its off. also very frugal approx 3ltr to 40 miles @ 60-70 mph .
Not huge hp at 22.5 hp but it still a fun motor to ride

^... I've not yet played around with GT kits but I've been sorely tempted to. They do look very good, as do Richard's cranks.

Plenty of food for thought there guys. How about the RT kit from MB? Has anyone used one to good effect. As a fan of the stuff MB produce I'd be interested if any good.

I have an RT225 with 58/110 crank, jet200 gearbox, phbh28, 16/46 and bgm clubman.
Does a gps'd 65 ok/top out at 70 and pulls really well.

My RT225 out of the box was clocked at 73mph GPS.....more than faster enough for me... :shock:
