I had to take the casing off my TS1 yesterday and noticed that there is a little bit of play on the first gear, the endplate clearance is now outside of the 0.07-0.30 tolereances as per the sticky manual. Is it normal that I should be having to reshim so soon after a build (2 months) or is something potentialy not right? Do I just re-shim and check again at a later date?

Many thanks as always :D

There are a few things that could cause the gearbox simming to get out of spec.

loose hub
loose end plate
drive axle wasn't all the way home when installed
excessive wear on the face of the gear(s)

I'd start at the hub, make sure it's tight and then check the endplate. Once everything is torqued to spec re-measure the gap. If it's still too big do the math and then get the correct shim.

As always, have the rear wheel off the ground when building or shimming a gearbox.

Hub is good, end plate tight, bit of play on rear hub bearing, rear hub was torqued up fully when I did the job but rear wheel wasn't off the ground

Letting the bike sit on the rear wheel with the end plate off will give you false measurements. What happens is the axle is only supported by one bearing and will sit at an angle due to the weight of the bike.

I use the rear jack stand when I do this job. Makes it easy to keep everything in line.
