Gear trouble

Rebuilt my Vega.
Went for a test ride last night.
It runs realy smooth and gears up to 3rd lovely, however down from third to second is hard and I got the odd crunch.
I havn`t changed the sliding dog (gears looked good) , could it be the problem?
