I need to remove the main lock from an LML Star where the key has been lost, I have a replacement to fit, but what's the best way to remove the old lock, drill it out, or is there an easier/better way? Any tips are welcome as these aren't my forte

without a key you will have to drill it out

careful as there is a small spring plate that is part of the assembly

still keep an eye on the parts and careful not to damage other parts - the lock bar and body

That's a different lock Gaz, the LML is a complete unit

ive just bought this to strip and use in a pk that had nothing - it was cheaper than buying the parts separate

how much are you replacing out of curiosity ?

I'm replacing the whole unit as in the picture Gaz, but after drilling it, I'm not sure I've done the right thing as the steering lock hasn't released yet, so I was gonna use a larger drill bit and see if I can force it to turn

I need too get the steering lock bar out, do you know how, as it seems to be held in place? Am i right in assuming the forks need to be dropped to release it out... although i can't see how to get it out from the unit in my hand like your one on eBay?

its ages since I did one ..... but am due shortly on new pk build !

From memory

you can disassemble the whole ignition unit - which is what you need to do as the large tubular outer part will already be present in the frame - so you just needed a few bits from the whole assembly

So first - From memory to disassemble the whole switch assemble - you need the key in

1. take out the grub screw and remove the plastic switch part
2. with some snipe nose pliers pull the lock bar out
3. the lock barrel has a sprung pin which acts as a retaining clip - you need to push in to free the barrel - the barrel will then push into the lock body (the black bit with on/off/ignition) but wont come out completely. You will need to tap the lock body out as it is held with spring plate - the lock barrel will stay in place. Be carefully not to loose the spring plate.

Now you have all the bits as you are only changing the barrel

You should leave the original lock bar in the tube in the frame so no fork dropping required #### as you are only going to replace the barrel and lock body.

So onto the frame

1. Prise out the existing lock body (assuming the barrel has been successfully removed - to get it out when drilling it you need to completely collapse it as the retaining pin referred to above in item 2 needs to be removed/broken)

2. Take the new lock barrel,lock body and put the spring plate in the slot then just push the barrel and body into the tube in the frame - it can only go in one way - it may need a little tap.

## if you have damaged the lock bar when drilling the barrel out and need to replace bar then again if memory serve me right you will need to drop the forks.

without pictures I hope that all make sense once you get going
