going to use a converted Vespa flywheel witha plastic fan , but the flywheel has no markings , as shown in photo with fan removed , how can i set the timing without flywheel marks , or am i just not seeing the bleedin` obvious

Make your own mark on both flywheel and flange once you've identified TDC.

Make a mark on the edge of the flywheel (anywhere). Use this mark to find your TDC (positive stop method or dial gauge). Then mark on the mag housing. Measure back 16/17 (timing disc or dial gauge) and mark again. Start up and check with strobe. The flywheel mark needs to "hover" over the 16/17 mark, adjust stator to get timing exact.

You still have the trigger mark on the flywheel. If it were me, I'd run the bike and hit it with your timing gun (strobe) to make sure those 2 points line up. Then with the motor off you can determine where the outer arrow should be. Just roll the flywheel to where the trigger mark lines up and pick a spot on the flywheel to make your new mark. Check the TDC point and you should be about dead on if you did it right. Just use a pen to make your marks first, then chisel them in when done.

I normally file every original mark off and start again with the methods above I then mark the new chisel marks with a white paint pen and write on the flange the timing ie 17deg and remove the flywheel and mark the stator position on the mag flange with something sharp and mark the stator do the same with the spare stator but in differnt colors
