Barrel studs

Have a casing where the threads for one of the barrel studs was completely gone. Basically just an 8mm hole...
Guy I know put in a timesert for me but accidentally put in an M7 timesert instead of an M8...
Can I just use an M7 stud instead of M8? The timesert can't be drilled to tap to an M8 thread and there's not enough meat around the stud to put in an M8 timesert...

I'd say you would be asking for trouble, the M7 will expand at a different rate to the other 3 so head/barrel leakage could occur. Have it drilled out and welded up, re-drilled and tapped back to M8. Won't be cheap but worth it for peace of mind.

Or I need to get an M8 stud with M7 threads at one end...

Remove the timesert and get it rewelded.
Trying to use anything else is asking for trouble. Getting it rewelded and redrilled etc shouldnt be that expensive.

It'll be fine with a 7mm thread at one end of an otherwise standard stud.

This is what I already had planned to do, will try to cut the M7 threadS tomorrow. Thanks for the advice. If it was a bare case I'd get it welder but the engine is already fully built...
