Engine really revvy ........

So, I have got my new build TS1 on the road for the first time and boy does it Rev really high really quIckly, I have to get into fourth really quick, even round town at 30mph! When in fourth, I haven't dared to go past 50 as its starts to scream!

Gearbox is a Li150 Pacemaker, JL3 pipe, clutch sprocket 46 and front 16.

Could it be a) the gearing or b) clutch? Or c) an air leak? Or something else?

Any thoughts?

Gearing is my first thought

Just for perspective, I use to run my TS1 (Taff mk3, 35TMX Mikuni) with a SX200 gear box on 16/46. That gave it a FDR of 4.51 This motor was great in town and on the highway. I couldn't pick up the front wheel but that didn't matter.

Yours has a 5.29 in 4th. Every gear is screaming and you're at 6k rpm at 57mph


could be jetting or clutch but those would give slightly different symptoms.

Had a similar problem on a standard SX150 a little while ago, everything checked out fine and it was really starting to get on my tits, it would get to about 40mph and just scream its nuts off- turned out in the end to be a series 1 cush drive spring which is shorter which can give the symptoms of a slipping clutch. I remember replacing the old (correct sized) spring with the S1 type when I repaired a blown drive side oil seal, thought the old spring and cap looked a bit worn. Once I popped a longer spring back in , it ran fine,Might be worth a look. Paul

Have you got a rev counter? Could be worth borrowing one you haven't, just to check approx speed against revs.
Less effort than whipping the engine to bits, as a first option.

So.....you've got a revvy kit, a revvy exhaust and revvy gearing and it's .........revvy.....hmmmmmm

Agree with MM get a rev counter and check against speed. I bought a "cheap as chips" one of e-bay for about £6 and it works fine. Might be tricky seeing it but I've seen a hand held one made by Draper that just clips round you're HT lead with no wiring involved. Think they cost about £30.

That's what I'm now thinking, it screams at about 3000/4000 revs, sound ok till about then but then revs out. I'm thinking of getting a centre clutch spring, what do you reckon?

Try slacking the cable adjuster first.

If that doesn't work, swap whatever springs you have for MB uprated ones.
