T5 cruciform problem

The cruciform needs replacing, however, the gear selector rod will not come out. It just turns and turns clockwise and anti clockwise. The threads must be knackered.

Any ideas how I can get this out without damaging the drive shaft please?

Brute force and ignorance.
Grip the button end of the selctor in vice and pull on the layshaft acting like a slide hammer hard and violently.
Shaun.

I have tried using a lump hammer on a chisel directly striking the cruciform which has suspended. I was trying to break the thread. It didn't work but I shall give your idea a go. Thanks.

Bad luck. I wedged a fine flathead screwdriver between the cruciform and selector rod and twisted. I was lucky, it helped the rod thread out.

Have used that method myself!
The trick is too try and put pressure on the cruciform and use a set of mole grips or similar on the rod to pull and turn , good luck !!
Probably need a new rod as threads likely to be shot :(

Cheers for the replies. I'd already ordered a new selector rod last night. Brute force in the shape of a chisel and a lump hammer did, in the end, break the resistance of the thread that was so stubborn.

Makes you wonder how it got so shagged in the first place though

Over tightening at a guess. This sort of thing is why I always like to build my own engines. Not that I am a mechanical genius (far from it LOL) but I do have a good idea of how parts should fit together to work OK.

To be fair, the gear selection was still very good it was just that the cruciform needed replacing whilst the engine was all apart.

Cottage cheese threads and pattern cruciform, with heavy handed over tightening ;-)
