After all the horror stories about early backplates I changed my s1 one for a gp one, all seemed fine but having mashed a drive the new one I bought was slightly different, the original one had a plastic thicker end to it, my new one, which worked by what's a narrower metal end and the drive is narrower internally. I showed it to an engineer pal and he said the drive end MUST go into a bush in the hub, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't, so does the difference in the drive end matter? Also my s1 speedo surely has a different size drive to my gp hub end, is anyone making speedo inner cables with different size drives?

There are 2 different drives I'm aware of, the thin end type same as the shaft and the thicker plastic ended one. You need to check the GP backplate hole , with maybe drill bits, to check the size. All speedo cables are the same size at the drive end.

But they aren't supported at the helicoil end? In which case does it matter what type is used

ok answering my own question and for info of others, the drive end IS supported, my gp backplates blind hole is for the type of drive with a plain metal end the same diameter as the shaft, my previous drive was of the type with thicker plastic end, it cannot have been supported at the drive end so this is why it stripped its teeth, so if your getting through speedo drives you probably have the wrong drive/hub combination
