I tried a multi SMD type LED bulb and it simply gave a light with multiple points of light and was Sh!t. so I reverted to a standard LUCAS lamp and it gave a great beam. Now I have the HID headlight the incandescent lamp looked so Yellow I opted for a CREE projector type lamp that is very white but I was unable to find the base fitting for the pathfinder. I used one of the large ribbed aluminium units with one Cree and found that after making a small adapter I could adjust the amount the lamp goes into the reflector and this makes a huge difference to the amount of light. Basically only in about 1/4 inch. Its not as much of a beam but is a similar colour to the HID being very white. I ended up breaking the lamp base off and soldering the wires onto the bulb and holding it in with a hot glue gun, so I have not damaged the original holder and can revert back at any time, Great at 5W but Im running full DC
Like these though mine were blue, If you crush the bulb base they break open and you can extend the wires, slap some silicon or hot glue on it and they will fit in most lamps
