How do you test the rectifier?

Would someone be able to tell me how i can check my rectifier.. I'm pretty sure its shot as after a 100 mile run the engine died (GS160 battery assist model). Once a fully charged battery fitted, it ran fine again. But before changing it to a solid state regulator I need to know how to I check this one to see if the problem has been sorted after fitting the new regulator.

Here is my current set up, which is the original rectifier:

first get a multimeter. the rectifier has four diodes inside these are oneway gates to electrical current.
