Evening all,
My mate has asked me to post this question as he is fed up of stripping and rebuilding his TS1 225. He is basically thinking of changing his set up to make it more reliable.
So what are people running that has proved to be a reliable touring motor? He is also interested in changing stroke, conrod length crank. also piston and stator plate.
He is currently running standard barrel and piston on indian casings, af race crank, indian stator plate and flywheel,30mm phbh and devtour exhaust.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Avanti.......as is, a good tourer but with potential for something a bit more "racey"

Why is it unreliable?, TS's have a good track record so if put together and set up properly it will be reliable.

What sort of issues has he had?

I have an RB built by Ian Frankland that has been together for over 6 years, had to do the basics like servicing and clutch etc but it is very reliable.

very similar to my with the exception of the injun casing and af crank , mine is Spanish casing and MB full circle crank , mines been together 7 years or so apart from new rings never missed a beat !!
so what been going wrong with it ??

my experience of TS1`s ( I run three) is they are reliable when set up correctly - both my set ups are roughly the same I run standard barrel, asso piston, chiselspeed modified SIL head, SIL webs with RB rod, 34mm VHSB, SIL GP g/b with 19/46 sprockets, SIL stator modified, SIL flywheel lightened and welded, Ducati CDI, Taffspeed replica exhaust.

regular maintenance reeds, rings, small end bearings, gearbox oil, regular inspections (top end, chain etc), clutch plates, carb rebuilds (worn needles, atomiser etc) - my only failures have been a broken wire on the stator (before I started to put araldite on joints), a pair of engine mounts.

one has been together for about 10yrs the other for about 7 both used for rallies only and the new one only a month or so - all home built.

to be honest its the only kit I would use.

ive built several for other to the spec as near as that have been just as reliable.

mate has a similar set again home built - very reliable

like anything of its kind producing nearly twice the intended bhp of standard they need to be built right and looked after without compromise.

be interesting to see why your mates is not reliable

Thanks for the replies everyone, he has had various problems with stator, holed piston etc think you have all hit the nail on the head just needs setting up and maintaining right. I have passed on info to him.
