Not my strongest point... .......cut a long story short SIP speedo and lights stopped working....had a fiddle  ....got them all working, screwed the head set on then it stopped working. Loose wire I thought...wires seem firm, checked earth and now no speedo, no main lights APART from the festoon bulb and the ignition won't turn off!.....what thoughts?

Are those blacks from the main loom connected to that green earth?

No they sit below and to the side. None of the wires have been taken out since the problem.

If your ignition won't turn off then the earth from the ignition switch to the head set must be disconnected

Could it be that the SIP speedo is earthing out on the steering clamp when you put the headset top back on

I've not touched the green wire and it seems quite firm in the holder. Also tried it with the headset top loose sitting high and no joy.

Tim, it does seem likely that this is earth related especially as the ignition won't turn off as this needs the earth in the headset to be connected to the green from the CDI in order to short it out (turn off). Photos from other angles might help.

I also wondered about a short as Storkfoot suggested but if that was the case you wouldn't be getting the side light.

whats hiding under the masking tape, not the best if its supposed to be insulation tape. just a small point the lamp holder is not shorted out as its sitting on the headset bottom?

The masking tape is just to hold the wires together, away from moving parts...I would agree it seems like an earthing problem so will have another look tomorrow. The earth wires are to the throttle and gear change clamps...Thanks for your interest.

As the festoon bulb works and the earth/ground for the headlight bulb should be the same? Then the non working headlight has to be the power feed from the ignition switch to the dip switch.
Currently my money is on a faulty ignition switch which may only needed a good squirt with some switch cleaner.

Timbo do you have a wiring diagram and a multimeter? No multimeter you need to solder two wires to a 12v? bulb to use that as a positive voltage tester.
