Mugello timing

Guys, just strobed a muggy 185 to 17 degrees BTDC and up the rev range it sits on the mark fine but on tickover its a good 2 to 3mms right of the 17 degrees mark. Is that normal on a muggy, just that I don't recall my set ups being that far right of the BTDC mark on tickover ?

The type of kit shouldn't have any impact on the behaviour of your firing point.

Yes agreed. I know I had timing issues on the really lightened AF flywheels before with the timing jumping about and inconsistent but this set up uses an SIL mid weight flywheel and they should be fine. It runs ok otherwise....

must admit the muggy can throw out some power....

I can never work this out, does that mean the timing is more like 20 degrees at tickover?

3 deg to right of 17 deg is 14.
3 deg to left of 17 deg is 20

yes its nearer TDC, so about 14 degrees. BUT on higher revs all way up a consistent 17 degrees

14 at low revs = not good, I'd be trying another stator. A Variable kit will start around 21/24 and move to 14/17 (approx).
yours being a static set-up should really stay static. Not uncommon tho, I had one static at 17 and advanced to 21 at 6k (bang) lol. I always strobe em now.

yes GP 240,......... I wondered if it was also an issue (hence this post). On my bikes I don't recall it moving on strobing (only on the AF lightened flywheel which is a know issue, mentioned in Stickys book and in that instant the light was disappearing on the gun then re-appearing and the arrow on the flywheel appearing at different locations against the mag flange). Could it be the pick up box on the stator, I might just try another stator. What would the consequence be of it ticking over at 14 degrees (it seems to start ok ?).
