Can a standard original Italian rear shocker be taken apart to be cleaned, repainted and replated? If so, grateful if someone could explain how it strips down? Thanks.

I once stripped a Sebac shocker down for painting by holding/ wedging it in a vice and using the fork compressor tool to compress the spring and releasing the two collets.
It's difficult to described but shown in the old lambretta manual.
Not sure if this works with all shock absorbers though.

cant see why not - they must be stripped for chroming
I did an R1 but instead of a spring compressor i put it in a work mate and used rachet straps to compress the spring.
Compressed it and removed the top collet - easier putting it bac as i went for 180lb spring.
Let me know how you get on - ive got a standard that could do with a refurb

If you only need to clean and spray one in good working order, you only need a vice, a rod and fork spring compressor.
If you want to totally restore one, like the one in the picture, things are more complicated, you should better send it to specialist.

^^^Thanks for your replies and a special thanks to Dimitrios for posting the photos.

I can't believe how many parts there are in the last photo! Can anyone recommend someone who would be able to undertake a full rebuild? Thanks.

i'd have thought the cost of re-building one would be more than the cost of a new one.....
