lambretta rear hub external seal:

Well, I thought I would just quickly pop an external seal in, see if that cures the leak before delving deep inside the gearbox.
Straight forward job really.
Hub off,
Retaining plates off,
Flick the seal out and pop a new on in and re-assemble.
Only mine went:
Hub off,
Retaining plates off,
Ooh, pull the hub cone off.......................
Thats when as I pulled the cone off with my fingers, the cone, the shaft and the bearing all came out as one
BOLLOX, thats never happened before

That's a new on on me.
Now if you can get it all back together the same way I'd be really impressed

I'd replace the bearing as well Shaun.

With some loctite 603 as your casings may be worn

Not sure I would have any luck getting the balls and spring back in from the bearing end, that would be like keyhole surgery
New bearing and loctite on the bench awaiting fitting.
Old bearing just pushes in and out, but the new Scootopia one feels like it will need drifting in, but still gonna glue it in

Heat casing and push it in, far better as it won't pick up the alloy leading to a loose bearing or oil leak by drifting it in .

Old fashioned and have a bearing drift set.
I have fitted the new rear bearing, and new engine mounts and these are also shot through overtightening after 600 miles since FULL restoration
I will admit to cold fitting both of the above, but I also have had no issues cold fitting in the last 20 years.
The old rear bearing was a Casa item, so the gearbox shimming must have been all acock, I didn't think anyone still fitted them

As a note on fitting bearings. Most will now heat casings to fit bearings, and absolutely nothing wrong with that. But there is no mention of it from Mr. Innocenti, cold drifting being order of the day.
