All the lights are working on my GP, but I can't get the sidelight (front festoon bulb) to work on its own. It will only come on when the headlight is on. Will this be an pass or fail on MOT? Did a search and can't find the answer.

The principle thing about lights for an MOT is that if they are fitted, they must work. Your side light works, but not necessary at the right time (if I might paraphrase the great Eric Morecambe).

Is that a fail? It might depend on your tester. Mine doesn't even check to see if my very non-standard LED headlights give a proper dipped beam (they don't) and I also think that traditional side lights are a complete waste of time, bordering on dangerous. All vehicles should have side lights removed so people can't use them at inappropriate conditions.

The good news is that the error sounds like a minor one and swapping some wires may solve your problem. For reference, the side light should go off when the your select the headlight position on the key switch, or at least mine does.

I'm not sure if I have been very helpful, but I feel better for a quick rant about sidelights in general. Good luck.

Its a 'parking light' anyway and shouldn't be relied upon in dim light conditions for other road users to notice you.

Knowledge , thanks for the answer. I think it was working as it should before the bulb blew. I have replaced it with an LED one and checked the wires and can't find a loose one. I'm thinking maybe a fault with the ignition barrel, but it's only done about 200 miles as its a new build. I'm going to risk it and see if it passes! Then deal with it if it doesn't !

You don't need "sidelights" for a motorcycle MOT.

Only if you have a battery model and a switch that you can kill the engine and leave the 'parking' lights on.
Otherwise its a position light.

Took it for test today and it sailed through so that answers that question! Cheers

as a definitive answer, if any lights are fitted to a scooter but are not wired up, should they work or not for an MOT?

From the manual

This inspection applies to: all machines, except those which have neither front nor rear position lamps, or have such lamps permanently disconnected, painted over or masked that are
. only used during daylight hours, and
. not used at times of seriously reduced visibility

If this situation occurs the machine presenter should be issued with a VT32 (advisory notice) recording the above.

I reckon not....
