Recently found this on another forum I'm on.
One of my mates was reading his licence last year, some years after moving into his house. He renewed his licence for change of address. Last year he noticed he was only licenced for an auto scooter, no cc limit. For years he has been riding around knowing he had a full licence, passed his test around 1980 oop north. Couldn't prove he'd passed his test. £800 ish later, full licence again. He'd been around Europe on a bike, scooters etc etc with his Mrs on the back. NO INSURANCE. Paid for it but wouldn't have been covered (he's ex Calverton Hornets I believe).
When the insurance company wrote my car off when a Land Rover driver dented the o/s wing (yes, really), I had to be on a three-way telephone call between insurance company/ DVLA/ and me to confirm a)I was who I said I was, and b) to the insurance company I had the licence required (Still don't get it but part of the insurance companies requirements [and they got straight through to someone ]) When I got to speak to them, they needed to confirm who I was by reading the details off my licence. Name/. Address / .Postcode x. issue number x. DOB x. They then were adamant that they would discuss it any further as That wasn't my licence/ details. I explained that they sent me the licence 19 years ago, to my correct address as printed on my paper licence in front of me. "No. It isn't you can't discuss", so I asked if how it wasn't me or my address did my HGV1 reminder come to my house "ERRRR, it was an error"
We did get to the bottom of it, by mail. And I refused to surrender my paper licence as I had no requirement to pay for a photocard version @£20 (and renew @£20+) to correct my details, as my licence was correct, it was their computer that was wrong "That's not possible sir"
Where this is going is.............You check your licence details/ categories online now. Just done mine. And it's 100% correct.

Worth reading if you have a photocard too, it does affect you, but do not throw anything away for heavens sake (what other proof do you have that you entitled to drive/ ride?)

Customer at work lost his bike allowance after upgrading, 40 years riding and had to take CBT and test to carry on riding.
Re-newed mine last year and scanned both sides of it before sending it off.

Also 3 years ago I was in a scooter accident, Vespa, its rider, pillion and complete rear hub and wheel came off in front of me,
Whilst we were being treated in 2 different hospitals, both of us were questioned by Police about not holding licences for the scooters we were riding, luckily we boht had our licences on us, mine was taken by the Police whilst in hospital, photocopied at reception and returned to me, and was never mention again

Always take copies and double check.

Good call, just checked mine and all good....gutted that I'll need L plates if I buy a Tank though

And also a good example of why it's not sensible to ride a TS1 registered as a 125 with a CBT.
Insurance policy worth about as much as a box of tissues on the hospital bed when you actually need it

Shaun, I was advised that if I was sending off(might even been in Scootering?), to get an on duty police officer to sign and record his number on the licence to say it was a true copy before sending the original off. I may be paranoid but I needed my licences to pay my mortgage/ put food in my mouth and couldn't risk losing entitlement as I couldn't prove passing tests, and by the time I retook (and passed) HGV1, PSV, bike and tracked (didn't need that at that time mind), I would have been skint and unemployed.
This online checker is up and working now (well mine came back ok- this time). And again would reiterate that these computer records will possibly be the only record that you've passed a test. Keep your paper bit / paper licence. Just say you've misplaced it.
