Noisy Engine??

Hi,

Noticed my engine seemed noisier than usual on way home from work. Running GT186 with AF Clubman, 25 mm Dellorto. Its been faultless so far. i thought it may be exhaust blowing as it seemed bit pokier than usual as well as noisy. Checked exhuast when I got home and all fine but I did notice very small oil leak from base of cylinder and it did sound sort of more rattly when it was running.

I am thinking of just renewing the silicone sealant at base of cyinder (its not been run with bas gasket) and rebuilding and tightening cylinder head bolts. Is this the right approach or am I missing something?

thanks

The oil leak has to be a clue, don't ride it.

If you have a base cylinder leak it's gotta be sorted mate. Your plan is sound and to be fair is basically a top end strip and rebuild so if there's anything else you'll soon find it.

your plan is sound, always worth investigating further if unsure.
did you fit a new crank or are you still running an original item? because there is a chance, particularly if original, that your big end is shot.
unfortunately its a case of trial and error. strip, if nothing obvious, rebuild, hope all is well.
if not, strip again.
a ballache i know but youll save alot of money sussing it now then allowing it to blow up!

Thanks all for the advice. I put a new crank in when I fitted the GT186. So today i stripped and decoked top end, and added some silicone sealant to base and head and retorqued cylinder head. Did about 20 mile spin up the A2 and all seems OK as could not see any leak and seemed to sound OK. Ollie was it you who was building your engine in the bedroom by the way!?!
