Gearbox mesh and backlash.

Just took my old gp 150 engine apart which I knew wasn't quite right. Turns out it had the correct gp/sx 150 gearbox in except for an li 125 first gear.Seemed to run ok,first gear was a bit lower than should have been, but the cluster is pretty screwed up where the meshing wasn't (obviously) quite right. I'm trying to collect gears to build a new box for my ts1 and have Dave Websters booklet, which explains how to identify loose gears etc. Measuring them with verniers is no problem, but he mentions checking meshing and backlash. How is this measured and checked correctly?
Thanks.

I think your just meant to drop them into the engine checking that they line up correctly and that there is no major slack (Backlash) batween gears and mainshaft (Gear cluster)...
