Li 125 Power

I'm looking to buy a Lammy (budget approx £4K). Not ridden a scooter for over 30 years and that was a Vespa PX125. I am looking for some advice about what to go for. I am 6' 2", 16 stone, it will need to cope with 2 up as the missus will be on the back occassionally. Will be used for short run outs and the odd rally. I've had a scan through the net and for my budget it looks like an Li 125 but not sure if it will be powerful enough. I could get one that has had an upgrade but would prefer it to be as original as possible. Is there much difference power wise between 125 and 150? I would greatly appreciate any advice. I have a full bike licence so no restriction that way.

What model do you prefer? Series 1/2/3/GP? Indian/italian/spanish.
Orig paint/used look or shiny paint job?
4k is a decent budget for something.

I think you'd find the power of a standard 125 pretty restrictive4, especially 2 up. "Kitted" engines can (when set up right) comfortably cruise at 55+ mph carrying a pillion, a basic 125 and you'd be in the mid 40's till you hit a hill !!

Got a mate selling an Indian gp. It's registered as a 150 (I think) but it's got a ts1 230 with a devtour pipe, front disc, paint job.He has spent a fair amount on it, it's kept indoors and goes well. It's in salisbury, wiltshire if your interested. He's wanting about £3,500 for it and IMHO it's well worth it. Text or call me on 07472 758589 if your interested.

Thanks for all the responses. Much appreciated. To respond to some of the questions and comments: I would prefer an Italian series 3 or failing that then a Spanish. I do not want to tinker too much with it so would like something that has had a good restoration job and is ready to go. I am not going to drape it mirrors and spots but will add some bars and a rack if needed.
I am always a bit wary of upgrades (probably due to lack of knowledge) but would definitely not rule that out as I know that a decent TV175 or SX200 is out of my budget. Thanks to oneday for the heads up of the Indian 150 but not what I am after. I'd rather take my time and find the right one. In answer to Shocky, I am in Coventry, I know a few of the guys in the All or Nothing Scooter club and had a bit of advice. Could anyone suggest anywhere other than ebay, pistonheads, gumtree and scootertrader to search.
Final question, Anybody know anything about the new Scomadi scooters due for launch. They are doing a 300cc version but not a lot of info about them even on their own website.

If you want to get a modern scooter then that's up to you, but don't expect to find a lot of friends to ride with unless they have similar scooters. Also don't rule out Indian GP's IF they have been well restored in this country, as the early ones are are every bit as as good as an Italian at a lot less money. I would start with your local club and try and buy something local. Your less likely to get ripped off. As already said £4k is a lot of money and should buy you a good scooter.

Thats a sweeping statement about modern scooters I ride both and ive never meet anyone who wouldnt ride with me becouse of the type of scooter I own , yes theres some p155 take , the only time ive experianced real negativity is on the way to the IW when i stopped becouse someone was broken down between swindon and Marlborough his panels were off and he said its alright mate my friends are coming so I went of and waited inthe cafe for the others in my group to join me about 20 mins later I get a call someones broken down so I go back along the road and my friends are helping him  and without being bigheaded im the only one with a get my hands dirty attitude i left them to it ...

I did not mean to imply I wanted a modern scooter, I merely asked if anybody knew anything about them. However, I would certainly not rule one out. I also would not want to be associated with anyone who made a judgment on the age of my scooter. I would not be pushed into buying something just to fit in. Lets be honest, you could not really call them friends if they would not ride alongside you because you are on a "modern" scooter. I would hope my friends are not that shallow.
