Bitter and twisted?

Bit of a long post but bare with me!
A mate of mines just bought a HB 208 top end and all new bearings and seals etc for his P2 engine. The engine was stripped right down and Harry checked it all over,re-shimmed the gearbox and fitted a new conrod kit to his crank webs which he also trued for him.I rebuilt the engine for my mate,im quite competent as ive worked on them before (although im no expert!) but i fitted the bearings and seals properly and pulled the crank in very carefully with a puller, made sure piston was right way up etc etc so im confident the engine all went back together as it should.
Went round my mates today to fire it up,and after 10 kicks,nothing...dead.
Big fat spark, plenty of fuel getting through but no sign of life at all.The plug was getting soaked after a few kicks each time even after turning off fuel and clearing crankcase of it.Also it seemed to be chucking a large amount of fuel through the carb venturi from the crankcase.Much more than usual.I checked the stator, and it was on the IT mark as instructed by Harry and i also cleaned the carb jets and made sure the float was working ok...all good, but the engine keeps showing these symptoms.
Found out afterwards that prior to my arrival this morning,my mate had changed the stator pick up and instead of using the flywheel holding tool,he did up the flywheel nut with a big rubber hammer and bar!
Could this have twisted the crank causing all these issues as i cant think of anything else?
