I have got an Italian ratio Li150 gearbox of unknown provenance where every gear and the Xmas tree is marked with a hand etched letter J about 3mm high which has a little box etched around it. Anybody got any ideas if this is original or one of the recent remade ones?

Sounds like a Series 1 or 2 I believe. Early stuff had the "J" (actually an I but looks like a J).

Usually cast though, not etched, a picture might help.

I don't know how to post photos but if you look at ebay item 171640785871 the second gear in the second photo is marked the same. From replies I have had on the LCGB website it appparently is quite a common marking on early gearboxes especially Li150s

Yep, that's what I meant by cast in, if it looks like that then probably genuine.

You could also use the gear box identification chart , like the one in Sticky's book, and a vernier to take some measurements.

Not the cast Innocenti logo. The second photo, bottom left gear. The etched symbol is on the gear tooth at about 2 o'clock

Yes those are Innocenti.


It's anybody's guess as to why it was engraved on to the gear. If I had to make a guess I'd say it was a production run thing or the guy who had the stamp tool took it home with him the day before. Who knows?

Someone has been counting the teeth ( i guess his name was Jim) He has marked a tooth to aid the count. I do it with a felt pen.
