I got creative and I've managed to get them in. I got some doweling (well the end of a paint brush) which was slightly smaller diameter than the bar that goes through and cut it to the width of the spring. I then packed it out with the needle bearings and offered it up. The metal rod pushed the dowel out and heypresto - the spring is fitted
