Guys,
Just stripped a mate's engine and the endplate's large shim has been eaten into by about 1mm leaving a circlular shape ground into the shim. On checking the 'torque'd up' layshaft (to 120 lbs) with the gearbox inserted, first gear is either flush with the layshaft OR just below it ......as opposed to Sticky's book, which mentions the layshaft should sit below the edge of the first gear cog. We tried 3 different gear boxes on the shaft with the same result, so presume the layshaft is the issue here.
Sticky mentions a tip to grind down the end of the layshaft, it probably only needs 1 - 1.5 mm's off i guess to achieve what's needed, but is there another way (other than trying a few other layshafts) thanks ......

It could possibly be the rear hub bearing. There are some dodgy ones that don't allow the lay shaft to sit deep enough. That would probably be the 1st thing to check. You'll have to remove the shaft to either replace or grind down anyway, so removing the bearing to check it would be simply enough.

If you've tried 3 different gearboxes then that eliminates a gearbox issue. If you have a spare lay shaft try that. If it's still the same it only leaves the bearing. It's a process of elimination I suppose. Good luck mate.

Gonna try 2 more gearboxes today, then another layshaft..........apparently you can also get the layshaft 'ground down' at an engineering place.....we only need about 1mm taken off. 'Sticky's book' says it's an issue on the LI 150, this engine is an LI 125, series 4 (probably a bitsa engine)
