Seal gone or not??? Arrgh!

I finished doing some work on my engine last night(kickstart piston gone again!), when I started it this morning there was lots of smoke coming out of the exhaust, very smokey, so I went for a spin and it cleared up within about 5 minutes. Went for another spin about half hour later and no smoke (just the usual faint vapour from running slighty rich.

So, I know that one of the signs of an engine seal having gone is thick white smoke, but as it has cleared can I assume that it is ok?

If it was the seal the smoke would only stop if you have run out of gearbox oil and your engine may not idle very well as air is getting sucked in, check your level, also it's much different to 2T, as you say thick and white and a different smell to it

I hope there is some in there as I've just been out and about all afternoon, giving it some on the dual carriageways! :D

It's not spit-back from the carb is it?
This will run down and collect, the petrol will evaporate leaving the oil.
Trust me it goes everywhere on the flywheel side.
If the DRIVE SIDE oil seal was faulty you would know about it....clouds of smoke often preceded by a struggle to pull away cleanly if stopped for too long in traffic.
I doubt (but could be wrong) it's your drive side oil seal.
