Dodgy steering bearings.

Hi all, has anyone come across upper steering bearings that are too small to fit the cone and race? I've just tried fitting a set and they are too small. I've tried them in 3 races and 2 new cones and they are too small in all of them. It's not a major deal I know but it's frustrating as they are supposed to be 'top quality' and I've had to order another set which has now slowed my rebuild up.

thats how the top bearings come now, fit them and then tightened gently, undo and you will see they fit in the top bearing ring.

I tried that and the forks were very stiff. I'm now going to split both bearings and fit them 'loose' hopefully that'll sort it. Thanks for your reply.

I fitted the bearing loose and the difference in feel is significant. Bit of a pain to do but worth the effort imho.

The other benifit of fitting loose bearings is that you can fit more ball bearings in if you want to. This distributes the load better and the bearings should last longer.

I fitted loose bearings to my other Lammy and to be fair it was a pain to do. This is the reason I was just going to fit them as they are on this build. Looks like I'll have to bite the bullet and fit them loose again.
