Ally kits

Anyone had any experience of the Ally/steel liner 190 kits that are available for small block engines?
What are the percieved advantages and any downsides?

I've used a couple with good results.

What I try to do is just get the cylinder then buy a Piston and have it bored to match- that way there is no problems with tight/ loose cylinder/ piston clearances.

The ports will need sorting as they tend to be pretty rough, but you can have a play yourself rather than pay someone else- if you cock up it doesn't really matter as they are cheap anyway!

I'm looking at the Beedspeed ones, though i expect the dealers all get them from the same source. Where that is i haven't a clue. I was surprised to see the 190 would fit a small block! but hey if it works, great.
I guess the biggest advantage with them (apart from being 190cc) is the better cooling of the Ally casting?

Dags see my post on the other thread 225 alloy kit, my mates one is from Beedspeed and seems ok. But I worked on a couple of others where the liner has worn out after a couple of thousand miles only.

Thanks for that Andy W i had a read. On the basis i know nothing about tuning barrels. I was thinking of buying a straightforward 175 conversion kit for my LIs150 that is awaiting resto (it's siezed at the mo)
When breezing through Beedspeeds site, i saw the ally kits and began to wonder ....mmmmmm. So i don't really know which way to go yet, but there's loads of time.

They are a bit hit and miss and you might get a good one that will give many miles of riding fun. As i said the Beedspeed one seems to be going ok, the others I have worked on I don't kow who supplied them. Another friend has one from AF Rayspeeds and that has clocked up a fair few miles with no issues and they come correctly ported to St4.
I have just built a Beedspeed Steel barrel 190 for a friend and had to do quite a bit of porting to bring them up to anything that resembled half decent as the timings were so low (140 Ex, 107 Tr & 143 In) that now goes quite well, new timings 165Ex, 125 Tr, 145In) fitted with a 25mm PHBL and an Indian Clubman (as thats what he had available). This was for his wife's first Lammy and she seems to really like it.

The ally kits from India, which is where hey are all from, I assume are made by many different suppliers? has it all spun itself out after the SR deal?
The reason I ask is that are these 186, 190 barrels (same thing) which are pretty much a slightly larger bore of the sr175, and also the 200 barrel for smallblock which im sure ive seen, are tey all just bored out 175s or are they dedicated larger bores therefore with a bit more meat on the walls?
I think i already know the answer, but its something worth thinking about. you could buy your 190 kit obviously scrapping he piston straight away and porting it, and then it could seize so you get the next oversize, have it bored out and your handed back a pile of fins...
Am i making sense here or have i got the wrong end of the stick?
having said that ive had great fun with my sr175 barrel. tuned it, learnt alot in the process, and it flies. lets just hope the liners not soft, although its been a few miles now!

I've go a 185 kit it's been matched to casing runs a 30mm Delorto chucks out 13 Bhp so far done 3000 miles
