5 plate clutch set up - any recommendations?

Hey,
I am about to treat my Eibar Jet 200 with a BGM 225 kit and crankshaft. It already has a 28mm carb and BGM big box clubman. So I want to upgrade the clutch to handle the extra HP. I was going to go to 5 plates and I know I need to replace the springs. I tried a mate's scooter with very stiff springs. Must say, my left hand is not weak (what with all the excessive masturbation), but I found it a real pain. Its a stronger pull than my Moto Guzzi and its dry sump. No fun in stop and go traffic. So I am looking for a 5 plate clutch set up what has a level pull similar to stock. Anyone got something like this they are happy with but also doesn't slip with a 225 kitted engine?

Thanks in advance for any help.
David

Don't worry about the extra HP, with that setup you will be fine with a standard clutch as long as you set it up right. However if you where going for let's say a Mugello, GT or Ts1 that puts out considerably more HP I would go for uprated springs. I have been running standard 4 plate with uprated springs in my mildly tuned ts1 and it has been fine for more than 10 years. If you use a good quality teflon lined clutch cable and are careful with the routing as well as checking the plates and spider for sharp edges you are ok with uprated springs, should be smooth. From my experience that low performing kit is ok with a well set up clutch with standard springs.

SX gearboxes are much harder on clutches than a GP. My Jet is fitted with a ReadSpeed 5 plate clutch and has dealt with a long stroke Mugello for several years. No need to fit a different basket and spider etc either.

+1 for the Readspeed 5 plate clutch. I have one in my 225 Avanti and another in a TS1. Both were carefully set of to give between 1.5 and 2mm clearance between the top plate and first friction plate. To achieve that clearance you will probably need to substitute some of the steels for thinner or thicker ones, I even had to put an extra steel under the top one on one of the setups. I opted to use MB springs in both of mine as they give a lighter pull. The Avanti clutch has been performing well and managed the 1500 mile round trip to Switzerland for the recent Euro Lambretta meeting with no slippage at all. The clutch lever is very light on the Avanti but it has SIP dog leg levers which do help. The TSi is slightly heavier using standard levers but is still ok. Neither have nylon lined cables so there is still room for improvement 8-)

Readspeed 5 plate with MB springs very nice action and easily copes with the 20 BHP my Imola makes.

Another vote for the Reedspeed 5 plate kit. About £40 including springs and works fine with my standard TS1.

I must also add that even the best clutch can be made to feel stiff if the correct inner and outer clutch cables aren't used. I always fit the best quality I can get. I have never had any issues with MB one's. I can pull in my clutch with one finger on both of my Scoots.
