Not really a problem but I am inquisitive! Rebuilding my 63 Li150 with 6v electrics and as per Stickys the electrics have no regulator. I know the stator can produce a varying range of volts so how is it controlled to maintain. 6v?

The simple answer is that early non-battery models aren't controlled by anything other than the load of the bulbs; which is why the brightness varies according to revs.

Machines with an AC regulator will have dim lights at very low revs but as soon as the stator output gets higher than 12V the regulator limits the maximum voltage and dumps excess power produced as heat.

Thanks speed demon does that mean to say that the lighting upgrade with a vespa 12v regulator will be a waste of time as voltage is speed dependant. This is what I was considering using.

A regulator will give you no advantage at low revs where the stator outputs less than 12v - the lights will still be dim. Where the advantage comes is at high revs where a (12v) stator will make over 12v and the regulator then prevents over-voltage from blowing the bulbs.

I've never done the mod shown on that page so I don't know what the voltage output of the brown stator wire is on its own. Given it's on an LCGB advice page it's probably from someone who knows their onions and you'd hope it would work as described...
